Process Addictions

Compulsive Process Addiction

Fraser Valley Treatment Centre, or FVTC, provides process addiction treatment and therapy for compulsive behaviors such as compulsive gambling, sex addiction, shopping and other compulsive behaviors. Fraser Valley Treatment Centre is a private, fully licensed, addiction treatment facility in Abbotsford, with cost effective therapy programs for compulsive behavior.

Process addiction is like drug addiction, except that the individual is addicted to a behavior, or the feeling experienced by that behavior. When an individual contributes to their compulsive behaviors, chemicals are released in the brain. These chemicals are similar to ones that take place during substance abuse, which in turn feeds compulsive behavior. There is no distinction between process addiction and behavioral addiction.

Process addictions can be just as destructive and life impeding as substance abuse addictions. If left untreated, process addictions can lead to chemical addictions in order to cope, or possibly, severe mental illnesses.

Common Process Addictions

The persistent craving to experience the high that is related to the behavior is so strong that the addict loses control and pursues the activity in spite of the negative consequences. The addiction can be overwhelming, making day to day life difficult as the person continually seeks out opportunities to participate in the behavior. Here are some common forms of process addictions:

  • Sex addiction
  • Shopping addiction
  • Exercise addiction
  • Internet and gaming addiction
  • Gambling addiction
  • Risky behavior addiction
  • Self-injury addiction
  • Porn addiction
  • Social media addiction
