What we Treat

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

OCD can impact an individual’s livelihood immensely: school, work, and relationships can be interfered with. Obsessions are repeated thoughts or urges that can cause extreme anxiety and distress. Some common thoughts people with OCD face are fears of germs; thoughts of forbidden and taboo subjects; thoughts of aggressive actions towards others or oneself; and thoughts of having things in a certain or symmetrical order. Compulsions are repetitive behaviours people with OCD tend to carry out in response to an intrusive thought. Excessive cleaning or hand washing; arranging and organizing; checking things numerous times; and compulsive counting are all examples of common compulsions. An individual who struggles OCD commonly can’t control thoughts or behaviours and spends at least one hour a day focusing on such. Symptoms of OCD may come and go over time, they may ease or worsen. Individuals with OCD that is left untreated may turn to substances in order to calm or subside their intrusive thoughts. Many factors can contribute to OCD. With treatment and medication, symptoms of OCD can be manageable; providing individuals with OCD a better quality of life.
